MINDFUL YOGA

BEFORE CLASS:

  • DO come to yoga hydrated! Drink water a few hours before you come to class. Please allow 2-3 hours after eating to come to class. If you are coming to a morning class, you might want to have a little juice or toast beforehand. Listen to yourself; you are familiar with your own constitution. If you are pregnant or nursing this may not apply to you.
  • DO tell the instructor before class if you are pregnant.
  • DO wear close fitting comfortable clothes. Baggy clothes may trip you or make it difficult for the instructor to assess your technique.
  • DO avoid wearing perfumes or scented lotions to class.
  • DO arrive at least 10-15 minutes before class if you are coming for the first time.
  • Please do tell us if you have any limitations that would concern your practice. This includes physical problems and surgeries.
  • DO leave your shoes outside the yoga room; take valuables in the yoga room with you.
  • DO turn off cell phones and pagers.
  • DURING CLASS:

  • DO understand the “real” challenge of class is to remain in the room for the entire class. If you need a break, try to sit on your mat and watch.
  • Don’t become discouraged if you are struggling a bit in class. You may do only one set of each posture, or even skip a posture if you need to. When you are ready, rejoin. Yoga is a journey. No one is watching or judging you. We are all focused on ourselves.
  • Don’t push it. Instead of trying to go as deeply or completely into a pose as others might be able to do, do what you can without straining or injuring yourself. You will go father faster if you take a loving attitude toward yourself and work from where you are, not from where you think you should be.
  • Everyday is different and everyday YOU are different.
  • Please be considerate of others in class. In large classes it is ok to be close to your neighbor.
  • DO be quiet. It is great to share a class with people you know but it can be distracting to yourself and others to have an extended or loud conversation.
  • DO stay focused on yourself; one of the best tips to balancing is to mind your “gaze”. Staying with yourself in the mirror, staying with your instructor’s dialogue, staying patient and loving to yourself and paying attention to what your body is doing IS YOGA.
  • AFTER CLASS:

  • DO try to complete your first two classes within 48 hours of one another.
  • DO as much yoga as your schedule allows. Healing, weight loss and real change takes effort. The more yoga you do, the faster you see results. It is safe and recommended for you to do yoga every day that you can.
  • If you have a headache or feel extra tired after class you may need some electrolytes. You can use a supplement like Emer’Gen-C (available at Central Market and Whole Foods).
  • DO make your best effort and find your best results by doing at least 3 yoga classes a week. You will get great benefits with regular practice. Remember: every day or every other day is a wonderful way to stay in the “yoga zone”.
